Born in 1939, Richard Childress was raised in Lexington, North Carolina on a farm along with his four siblings. His first career started at the age of 24 as a chauffeur for legendary NASCAR driver Richard Petty. For several years, he worked on cars with Petty and earned a reputation as an expert car builder. In 1972, Childress decided to field a Pontiac for himself and went on to start Richard Childress Racing in the same year. The rest is history.

Throughout his career, Childress was instrumental in introducing several major sponsors to the sport of auto racing. He also won the Cup Series Championship six times and furthered the leadership role he has been serving in the auto racing industry.
