This Artist Is Changing Lives With His Creative Initiative To Help Homeless People
Willie Baronet is an art therapist, artist and instructor at the University of Texas, Dallas. He has spent over seven thousand dollars purchasing the cardboard signs created by homeless individuals for his ongoing project “Signs of Humanity”. Willie’s goal is to collect and create awareness about homelessness in the hopes of helping those individuals. He believes that art can be a powerful tool in creating social change. His mission has touched the lives of many people around the world.
The Cost of Compassion
Since Willie began his project in 1993, he has visited 48 states in the US, chauffeuring across the country to collect printed messages. Willie’s passion has cost him around seven thousand dollars but he has no regrets. He explains: “The amount of money that I’ve spent doing this is worth 10 times the amount of money that I’ve spent.”
Converting a Creative Vision into Reality
The signs are used in interactive installations, live presentations and online campaigns to create awareness about social inequality and homelessness. For his next campaign, Willie hopes to create a website and have a crowdfunding page to cover the costs of his travels. He is also interested in creating educational resources that focus on homelessness and expand his project beyond the US.
